How to Position Yourself for Media Attention

I’m breaking down 6 key tips to help service-based women entrepreneurs (like coaches, therapists, and consultants) get media-ready before the spotlight finds them or they find it.

1️⃣ Nail Your Message Before the Media Finds You

🔹 You don’t get ready after the media calls…you get and stay ready for media opportunities. Know your key message, brand story, or thought leadership points, and practice how you want to be positioned during interviews and features.

Why it matters: Media opportunities move fast, particularly with traditional media like your local news or radio. When you’re clear and can articulate your message/story, you’re easier to book and easy to quote.

2️⃣ Your Online Presence Is Your First Pitch

🔹 Before a media contact reaches out, they’ve already checked your website, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn. Does your online presence position you as an expert? Are there any videos that show you can speak? Do you have professional photography or video that they can use?

Why it matters: Your digital footprint and visual branding should look the part, which includes a strong bio, quality brand photos, and consistent messaging.

3️⃣ Create a “Media” BIO or Short BIO

🔹 Media professionals are busy. Your bio needs to tell them what you do, who you help, and why you’re different, etc. This needs to be in three to six sentences and not a two page BIO. Keep your full BIO for your website.

Why it matters: The media/short bio makes you more memorable, quotable, and easier to introduce.

4️⃣ Be a Storyteller

🔹 Media wants emotion, transformation, and real-life relevance. If your story inspires, educates, or connects to current trends, it’s attractive to media outlets!

Why it matters: Your story is your entry point. The more authentic and articulate, the more likely it is to get booked for a media feature.

5️⃣ Be Visible, Then Vocal

🔹 Don’t wait for a media pitch. Start positioning yourself as an expert or leader in your arena by creating your own “media” content, such as live streams, blogs, and podcast episodes.

Why it matters: Journalists, podcast hosts, magazine writers, and producers are looking for experts online. If you’re not posting, you’re invisible.

6️⃣ Media Builds Your Brand Even if You’re Not “Famous” Yet

🔹You don’t need a million followers to be media-worthy. You need a message that matters and the confidence to share it.

Why it matters: Media mentions give you instant credibility, SEO power, and leverage in your industry, even with one solid feature. Your media attention is timeless and never expires!

If the media called you today, are you ready?
