As a speaker, presenter or faciliator you want to capture pictures and or video of you in action. This is critical content for your website design and other marketing materials. There is just one problem… how do you do that without having a photographer and videographer follow you everywhere you go?
Well I posed the following questions in the Coach, Speak & Write For Profit Facebook group hosted by Master Coach, Aprille Hunt …
How do you capture pictures of you speaking at events?
Do you take someone who takes pictures?
Do you ask someone in the audience to take your pictures?
Do you rely on the event photographer?
Let me share some of the key strategies and answers received!
Shadé Adu
Speaker & Personal Brand Strategist – I help women entrepreneurs build profitable brands.
“These are just some of the things that I have done and will be doing. I am being very particular about my Speaker Photos.
1. I bring my own branding photographer because they know exactly the shots that I need and want.
2. I bring my own camera and my own tripod because you have to be your own paparazzi. The tripod fits into my purse.
3. I request an assistant at speaking gigs. I will be pre-training the next assistant because the last one cut my head off in the video. Everyone does not have an eye for branding and photography. You need photos that are going to get you more speaking gigs.
4. I make sure that my cell phone is the backup and that I have a tripod and stand so that I can also get social media content. (Record land space instead of portrait. It’s better for Youtube)
5. Ask the event photographer for your photos. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t. I am missing so many amazing photos because of this.
6. (New System) Bring someone or train the assistant and give them a list of preferred poses. I even create a Pinterest board of poses. I may start to bring a pose checklist with me. There are certain marketing shots that the photographer must get and if they don’t understand branding, marketing, and the business of speaking, they don’t know.
7. Request testimonials from the event organizer and get video and photos of the attendees. (Video is better because you can always transcribe it) I have a bunch more to say about this, I’m working on speaker marketing materials right now and it’s so important to think about your speaking photos in advance.”

Dominique Bond
Founder of Ace Ambition – I teach people how to eliminate mental barriers so they can pursue their purpose with a purpose.
“This is an excellent question. I have invested in a decent camera just in case I needed someone to take pictures for me. I choose people that I know and they all came out good.
I have paid photographers in the past to take pictures for me but now I use those funds for videographers.
You can also use college students that are taking photography classes for no cost or for a lower fee.”

Dr. Jasmine Zapata
Community Physician, Author, Speaker and Coach
“Whenever I can…. I negotiate it in the speaker’s contract for them to have a professional photographer at the event and allow me to have copies/access rights to the pictures.
It’s easy since organizers already have a photographer there. Alternatively, if I’m at a smaller event I’ll just ask one of the organizers to take picutres or videos and then send them to me.
Occasionally I’ll hire my own photographer but you have to be careful with that because if they get audience members or attendees in the photos, you don’t have photo release consent.”

“A combination of both Sharvette. Like at the EPIC conference, my pictures were taken by the event photographer. Or my good ones from Traffic Sales & Profit Game Plan were taken by Lamar Tyler and I think his photographer he had.
Other times I have had a friend or someone in the audience. Unfortunately at times some of those pictures were horrible and I can’t even use them. So if you pick someone in the audience, try and choose someone who understands how to use their phone camera…lol”

Donnalee Donaldson
University Instructor and Administrator in Rwanda
” I ask someone to take them, or I get the official pictures from the event photographer later. But I realize I have missed a huge opportunity over the past few years by not videotaping myself. I’m going to start bringing a little tripod, and using my phone to record. Even a little cellphone video would be better than nothing at all.”

I love this piece, it details what a public figure needs when it comes to getting the perfect shot during shows. Apparently, the suggested methods are efficient, but I think it’s best to go with your personal photographer for any event.
Thanks James!
This article was very useful. Thank you for sharing these awesome tips!
You are welcome Shaquan- thanks for stopping by my blog!
wow, I found this piece very interesting, Most times, I do almost the same thing Donnalee Donaldson does, Whenever I’m in an event and wants to take pictures, I ask someone to take them for me or I use the event photographer. But, Reading this has inspired me to start using my phone to record.
Good idea Ashley!
