So I did a thing… I got on the Facebook Dating App

I know some of you reading this are thinking… “Wait, Facebook has a Dating App?”. LOL – that probably means you are married and Facebook did not even show this option to you. Others are probably saying… “Sharvette- I am surprised you tried the app!”. Yep, I threw my hat in the ring because I was curious and partly from a small dare.

At any rate, let me tell you three things we as small business owners and entrepreneurs can learn from the Facebook Dating app:

1) The new “Love Connection”. – Most people use Facebook to connect with friends, family and customers. Facebook was smart to recognize that their service can also be used for love connections to sync up people who don’t know each other. Some may say that the Facebook Dating App is even safer than other dating apps because you can see a few mutual friends of the potential love interest. Think about HOW your product or service can be used for something different OR think about other ways to serve your current customer base.

2) Get the digits! – One interesting thing about the Facebook Dating App is that the message feature is very limited. It does not have a separate notification feature or an audible alert. I guess some guys thought I was dissing them but I just missed messages! I believe Facebook really wants to just do the introduction and then push you to connect offline (i.e. text message, phone call or etc). That is exactly how small business owners should think of connecting with customers on social media. Figure out how to get the digits, or at least the email address so that you can have direct communication with your potential customers.

3) I have a thing about height! – So I am a tall girl, 5’11 to be exact. I typically prefer to date someone at least my height or taller. For the record, I have been out with guys shorter than me. When the Facebook Dating App first launched, it did NOT have height on the profile. It has since been added. I am sure a marketing focus group or some survey told Facebook to do that. Here’s the lesson: when was the last time you tweaked your product or services? Have you asked customers what would make the experience better? We all have room for growth and improvement.

Well that is it… I thought I would share this somewhat transparent moment on Valentine’s Day in the hopes of making you smile, laugh and or think.
